Oasis Stores Blogger Event

I was invited along to Oasis HQ last week to celebrate the launch of their shiny new Argyll Street store and preview the fantastic Christmas collection.

After the obligatory bubbly and cupcakes, the inevitable 'trying-on' happened - and Grazia's Style Hunter was on hand to snap our combinations. I went for a sequinned gold mini (definitely got my eye on that one for party season!) and a gorgeous coral maxi-mini hybrid. Other key pieces included a leather blazer and Chanel-esque tweed short-suit among other great dresses, coats and separates.

A new Oasis fan here!

My luck's been up recently, I've written for The Telegraph and I-D magazine in the space of just a few weeks- they're only short online articles but it's all a bit overwhelming...
A couple of years ago I was saying that I'd love to write for I-D magazine "when I was older", and I've done it (BOOM!)

In other news I've also shot with Rankin recently, (yes, THE Rankin) and will be featured in his new book which everyone is *hoping* will be out in October. I've seen the chosen shot and I absolutely love it, so look out for me!

email email email! Write yourself a good cover letter, and do a CV tailored to the kind of work you're applying for, and send them to all the agencies you can. Also twitter is becoming increasingly used for business, put out a few tweets send them to a few good contacts and you might be surprised. They don't usually list things at modelling agencies on here, but LCF creative careers is an amazing website with listings of internships/jobs in the fashion world http://www.arts.ac.uk/student/careers/creative-opportunities.htm As for advice I'd say be prepared to start at the bottom and no matter how shit the job seems at first, putting the effort in will pay off eventually xx

I love your blog, but can't help thinking surely the bad outweighs the good of the fashion industry? The mass pressure it exerts on woman to look 'perfect' and be 'thin' is without a doubt the main reason why anorexia and bulimia are so common.

Firstly, thank you (: But I disagree. I find it hard to get my opinions on this across but I'll word this as best I can... Of course there are negatives, and we all know that 'thin' is portrayed as being beautiful in high fashion but I think the problem(s) don't initially stem from the fashion industry at all. Most eating disorders aren't about wanting to be thin at all, the weight loss is more of a by-product of wanting to control something in their lives and what you eat is one of the few things you can have full control over. Yes, the industry might act as a trigger but we need to STOP BLAMING IT OUTRIGHT. Think about it, if someone's willing to let a photograph, (a photograph which has probably used the most flattering camera angles possible and been edited heavily in post-production) 'get' to them or dictate how they should look then is the *real* issue what's in the photograph or people's own attitudes?

Fashion Week AW11: The Double Life

Anyone's who's been reading this blog for a while will know that last season I attended London Fashion Week for the first time, to cover shows for LDNfashion, the website I write for. I'd become so used to watching the shows, trying to observe as many details as I could whilst trying to get a snap of every look for future reference that when I started working towards being on the catwalk, it was...well a little odd.

The funny thing is, at show castings I was less interested in staring down the other models -my competition effectively - but more interested in trying to get a sneaky glimpse at the almost finished collections at the designers' studios. (Sass + Bide was old news by the time they showed)

Anyway, over the past week I've had this really odd feeling, I've kind of been overwhelmed by how well modelling has gone so far, especially how quickly it's happened. When I was taken on by Select I said that there were three things I wanted to achieve - to walk one show, do an editorial and book a campaign/money job before I turned 18. I've done that in four weeks so I'm kind of like...now what? Which is the fun thing, I don't know where this will take me, but I'm loving it (: Big thanks to my bookers, and everyone at Select who have been amazing.

This is starting to sound like a bloody Oscar speech or something.

My editorial for the Sunday Times Style is out on Sunday (that's what I've been told, anyway) so go buy it ok?

Elizabeth Lau's Pop-Up Boutique

The lovely Elizabeth Lau invited myself and some fellow fashion folk down to her Pop-Up Boutique off Carnaby st. in London for afternoon tea. The boutique is honestly one of the most thought-out I've ever seen - attention to detail seems like an understatement. Every element of the decor compliments the clothes. There were even goldfish in the walls (which I'm told will be going home with the designer herself when the shop closes, so don't worry). I wish I'd got some more photos - these really don't do it justice, but when some more from the event I'll post the links for you to see.

Tea, cupcakes and a nice long chat about blogs we love, hate and rate and some other general banter made for a wonderful afternoon.

Over the knee boots...DIY Project?

Ever since the AW'09 shows where these bad boys were everywhere, I've had a thing for over the knee boots. Having slim calves, it's always been difficult finding boots, let alone boots that need to fit about 3/4 of your entire leg. I did eventually find a pair, they were flat (5'11 + borderline hooker boots + 5 inch heels = not so good for everyday wear) suede, and from Dune. I wore them four times and the back of the heel had become so worn you could see the 'inside' (lining? padding? the bit between the inside and the suede) of the boot. So I had to return them, and that was the death of my thigh-high boot wearing.

They may have been a trendy item last year, but they have definitely re-emerged lately - not as a one-season-wonder but as just as much of a classic as the ankle or knee-high boot.

And this, is why I have decided I want to own a pair again. I even announced it on twitter. That's how you know it's official.

Geneva of the amazing DIY blog A Pair and a Spare suggested a mid-heel suede pair from an old Zara collection which she found on ebay, unfortunately I'm a lot less lucky when it comes to ebay shopping. Anyway, whilst searching for something similar, I came across these...

They were DIYed by Love Maegan out of an old leather skirt, she does a great, detailed tutorial - click on the link.

If I can find a cheap pair of leather trousers, leggings, or a skirt, or anything along those lines, and a nice inexpensive pair of basic ankle boots, I'm going to try and make some. I think I'd like them more fitted, and more like the Rodarte ones in the first picture in this post, so I'd put ties all the way up.

What I'm stuck on is whether to make them using leather like in Maegan's tutorial, or whether to try suede. At least which to try first, if they work out well I'll do both. I know primark have some leathery and some faux suede leggings in at the moment, perfect for cutting up and experimenting with. I'm going to raid a charity shop or two today as well just in case they have some better quality material.

Do you guys have any ideas/ suggestions / anything to say regarding this DIY? I hate starting things and not finishing so if you have any words of wisdom please share!

Like most people my age, I'm a serial high street shopper. When I'm looking in vintage stores and markets I prefer the pieces to find me rather than the other way round, and when it comes to splashing out a bit more than usual, nine times out of ten it'll be on something I've wanted for a while and have done my research on. So that's why the majority of what I own comes from the high street.

That said, there are certain stores I just won't touch with a barge pole. I've always liked New Look for their shoes and boots, and occasionally their other accessories. Other than that, New Look was simply a 't-shirt and jeans' shop in my eyes, nailing the trends about three months after everyone else, and just not having the same (cheap) chic quality that you'd find in Zara or Topshop.

But, dear followers, New Look has progressed. All the images in this post are from their Spring/Summer 2011 collection which I was able to preview @ their press day last month. I can safely say I was pleasantly surprised to find that New Look had 'upgraded' their fabric choices and will be stocking everything from intricately crocheted jackets to perfectly worn-in festival clothes come next year.

Oh, and everything's still super affordable.

LFW: Ashley Isham SS11

This was the first ever LFW show I went to. I remember being on the phone to the PR company trying to sort out a ticket-mix up, dashing there frantically after college trying to arrive on time, still having to sort a ticket mix-up when I finally arrived, and feeling severely underdressed (I didn't actually know I was going to this show until the day of). Pretty much sums up the wonderful world of fashion.

ON|OFF venue, Victoria House.

Ashley Isham: Born in Singapore, based in London. He studied at London College of Fashion before attending Central St Martin’s. He began the Ashley Isham label in the year 2000, and is now firmly at the forefront of London Fashion.

Show Notes: Bright blue and fuschia cocktail dresses and gowns. Embellishment, and lots of it. Metallics (mainly silver) on top of black fabrics. Colourful headpieces worn above slicked – back hair. (Love it)

Set: Beautifully clean white, with silver floral details.

The show in three words: Glamourous and sophisticated with the right amount of London edge.

Despite it being at the far-too-early time of 9.30am, me being an idiot thinking the closest station to New Oxford St was Oxford Circus and having to walk a good half mile to get to the show venue, and witnessing a model fall first-hand (you could literally feel everyone hold their breaths as she stumbled backstage! Poor girl.) this was probably my favourite of the shows I attended. Here's why...

Saturday September 18th

My Beautiful Fashion venue, New Oxford St.

Bernard Chandran: Voted Malaysian designer of the year, Bernard Chandran has dressed celebrities, beauty pageant winners and even royalty. He decided he wanted to be a designer at the age of 16, and studied fashion at a local college in Malaysia.

Set: The venue had an industrial warehouse feel to it, very urban and very modern. Protégée of Kanye west, Mr Hudson DJ’d and the music was brilliant. Super loud dubstep & great clothes? Absolutely splendid.

Show Notes: Metallics, metallics! Super shiny metallics! Silver and gold on black seems to be a recurring theme this season. Beautiful silhouettes belted at the waist and the right amount of detail (some feathers & sparkle are always welcome). Amazing! We witnessed our first model stumble this season (aside from a teeny hint of one at Ashley Isham), the poor girl’s ankles were wobbling right the way along the catwalk and even as she was almost to backstage safety she was almost down. That looked extremely painful. Nevertheless, the rest of the show was great. This is definitely one of our favourite collections so far.

Show in three words: Uber cool elegance.

LFW: Craig Lawrence SS11

This was a presentation instead of a conventional show, which is great for seeing the clothes in detail and getting good shots without having to keep up with the speedy pace of a runway model.

Saturday September 18th

The Portico Rooms, Somerset House

Craig Lawrence: Craig studied at Central St Martins, London. He created the knitwear for six seasons for Gareth Pugh, and his designs were featured on the cover of the special edition issue of Another Magazine. His SS11 collection is inspired by Theo Adams, performing in Brighton last year and summer holiday photography by Martin Parr.

Show Notes: More metallics again today. (Definite trend) Wonderful floor length gowns, fabulously flattering – the girls look serene and statuesque. The dishevelled knits maintain an edge that we all love. The detail of the knit work is wonderful. This is why I love presentations just as much as catwalk shows – you can go up close and really appreciate the work. Models’ hair has either been sprayed grey or is a very cool- toned colour to compliment the silvers and whites in the dresses, and braids and backcombing make it look as if the girls have emerged from the wilderness (albeit a very classy one.)

Set: Relatively simple, with a few centrepieces which match the dresses.

The show in two words: Rawly stunning.

LFW : OSMAN

Saturday September 18th

BFC Show Space, Somerset House

Osman: London- based designer Osman Yousefzada began his career not as a designer, but as a City banker. After realising his creative calling, Osman studied at St Martin’s and released his first collection during fashion week in September 2005.

Show Notes: Minimalism prevails! Neutrals, black with a pop of pink, and even more lime green. Cream patent leathers, gorgeous. Tunics over flared trousers (strangely flattering). Simple tailoring makes for super smart looks. Hair is almost weightless, very natural with a slightly matte texture.

Set: A white catwalk to carry on the theme of simplicity.

The show in two words: Subtle sophistication.

London Fashion Week

Most of you will know that last week I attended my first ever LFW. I absolutely loved it, even more than I anticipated I would. Ended up being second or third row in almost all the shows I saw, apart from the bigger designers like Osman, which was not bad considering it was my first ever season and all the organisation for it was done not much more than a week before! Can't wait for the AW11/12 collections (my gosh time flies)...February suddenly has a great importance...

Which is mainly because I use my other blog much more, and I contribute a lot more to LDN Fashion. But I can't really use either of those as a personal blog, so I'm back here.

First things first, I AM GOING TO FASHION WEEK! I'm not sure how many shows yet, but even if it's just the one that I already have my invite to I will still be over the moon. Attending London fashion week was kind of a lifetime goal, so to already be given the opportunity to go (as press, might I add!) is amazing, and has pretty much made my year.
College has started again for me, and I'm loving it so far, even if it HAS only been a day. I have 2/3 of my old teachers and I find out if I have the same one for art tomorrow. Would be great to have kept all the same teachers, they were all pretty good to be honest. Apart from music of course. But if you know me you'll already know about that, and if you don't, I wouldn't want to bore you with it.
What's also exciting is that I'm applying for university soon. I can't wait until that's all done and I (hopefully) start getting offers. It'll just give me that extra motivation to do well this year (:

That's all I feel like writing about for now, but I'll probably post again on thursday, I'm attending a couple of exciting events which I will tell you all about!

Hello fashionistas! I know I haven't updated this blog in while, apologies for that! I have however been frequently updating my fashion blog Versaii which you should all check out.

Mac Studio Finish Concealer

I'm keeping this one short. It's brilliant and the only make up product I'll ever feel the need to use every time I go out. We all know Mac does great products and this is a classic.

Costs about £12.50 for a standard 7g pot, which is small but lasts ages (I'm pretty sure I've had mine for nearly a year and there's still a decent amount left)

Pros: everything
Cons: nothing

If you're sick of using cheap concealer then cut to the chase and get this one.

P.s. Being the slight twit I am, I only just found out this has the added bonus of spf 35, great if like me you hate wearing sun cream on the face (:

Review - no.2 - Rimmel 1,2,3 Looks Mascara

I bought this a while ago when my other mascara broke (While I'm here I'll do a super quick review within a review and say never buy Gosh mascara because it's shit). It was on offer in boots for about £5 I think, and I'm a sucker for a new product so thought I'd try it out.

Claims: Rimmel say that with this mascara you can create not one, not two, but three different looks by adjusting how much product is loaded onto the wand, and therefore varying the volume.

LIES.
Well, you CAN adjust the mascara tube but it really doesn't make much difference to how much mascara gets on the applicator, neither does it make much difference to how thick your lashes are.
Pros: It's cheap
Cons: It doesn't do what it says it does.

Even if you think of it as a 'regular' mascara it still isn't very good, the older rimmel products are much better.
It isn't terrible though, so I shall use it until it finishes, then probably return to one of the three greatest mascaras I've ever used:

Review - numero uno - Dermalogica

Dermalogica dermal clay cleanser - £16.33 250ml / £31.48 500ml

This is the best face product, ever.
I've been using it for about two years now, along with several other Dermalogica products which I may or may not review later.

Basically, I love this product. I have no complaints and have bought it several times. It's designed for oily skin - it stops build-up which ultimately stops you getting spots. I use it twice a day - sometimes only once - and haven't had a bad breakout since my first order. The formula is very thick, and as the name suggests, like clay. They say to apply to a dampened face, and you only need a small amount of product to thoroughly cleanse your face. I find it works best if you use warm water beforehand to open your pores, then use an amount about the size of a 10p piece and apply (troublesome areas first, e.g. T-zone). Then rinse with cold water.

Pros:
- deep cleansing
- thick & creamy formula
- pretty much odourless (no strong fruit or floral smells, but it doesn't smell of chemicals either)
- prevents breakouts

Cons:
- This product is quite expensive

Despite the price, a 250ml bottle will last around 3-4 months, and a 500ml bottle will last around 6-8 months

It's almost at that point in the year where we soak up the very last of the sun (or not, which is often the case in the UK), pack away the high-waisted denim shorts, and start thinking about what we'll be wearing for Autumn & Winter.

I shop far too much, buy far too much. So I'm ATTEMPTING to buy less this coming season without having to look like I got dressed four years ago.

How?
I'm going to gradually put together a shopping list, then narrow it down until it's realistic. I'm starting with looks from the shows, which I will then try my absolute hardest to replicate on the high street when they get their AW10/11 collections in. All I can say is, god save Topshop.

I'm not one of those people who simple moans about people having the same thing, and claims to have been the first person in existence to wear/listen to/make something. It's stupid, if YOU know about something, chances are someone else does too.

Having said that, no, I don't particularly like it when I see a large number of people with the same thing as me, so after coming face to face with about five people with these H&M trainers in the space of a week I decided I should customise them, and I made these studded beauties. I've worn them out only once and I was asked where they're from.
